Plantation (Accommodation)
This is an excellent choice of accommodation if the properties on the crater rim are full or if you don't mind staying just outside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. We find the design of the lodge extremely stylish and always take photos to incorporate into our own houses. The German owners are very attentive and the elegant colonial style of the lodge is welcoming.
Plantation Lodge is located on a working coffee and cultivation estate on the outskirts of Karatu, less than an hour from the Ngorongoro Crater. The individually furnished rooms and suites, which blend harmoniously with the flowering garden, offer comfort and relaxation. Everywhere you look, you can see and even feel the personal atmosphere of this owner-managed lodge, with furnishings selected with great attention to detail.

The lodge, with just 16 rooms, offers the cosy and intimate atmosphere of a well-run country house. The elegant rooms are well designed, with spacious beds, en suite bathrooms and wood-burning cookers in each sitting room. Outside, there are beautiful gardens overlooking the adjacent farmland and a swimming pool. The food and service are of high quality, and the owners, Renate and Udo Marahens, who have been farming in the area for many years, are actively involved in the day-to-day running of the lodge.
At almost 2100 metres above sea level, this is one of the most attractive climates, with hot days and cool mornings and nights. Most guests use this property as a base for exploring the Ngorongoro Crater, a must-see, as some 25 000 animals live in this extraordinarily diverse caldera, 19 kilometres in diameter. During the rainy season, a lake builds up in the centre, attracting flocks of thousands of bright pink flamingos.
